Whitchurch CE Infant & Nursery School

British Values

At Whitchurch CE Infant & Nursery School we take our responsibility very seriously to support our children in becoming good local, national and global citizens of the future; nurturing and modelling high expectations of love, care and respect for one another.

 

We teach our children through a creative curriculum that matches the requirements of the EYFS Framework and the National Curriculum. We also incorporate the life experiences and interests of our pupils and carefully reflect these through the learning opportunities we provide.

 

The Department for Education states that there is a need:

 

“To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

 

Our school reflects British values in all that we do, underpinned by core values of Peace, Love, Respect, Trust, Kindness and Honesty, which can be seen as equally relevant whether our families are from a Christian, other faith or non-faith background.

 

We encourage all our children to be creative, unique, open-minded and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and others in our school.

 

The work that we do with the local Whitchurch community reinforces our children’s understanding of their important place within our local community and beyond.

 

At Whitchurch CE Infant & Nursery School we actively promote British values in the following ways:-

 

Democracy

 

At the beginning of each school year the children decide upon their class charter and the rights associated with these. All the children contribute to the drawing up of their Class Charter.

 

Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard and are actively encouraged to share their ideas and interests and make a meaningful contribution to the running of the school.

 

Our T.E.D. teams (Together Everyone Decides), reinforce this model, when groups of children work with our staff to discuss issues, develop an area of school life or share ideas.

 

Rule of Law

 

Through our clear and positive Behaviour Policy, we develop our children’s understanding of the importance of following rules; that they keep us and those around us safe. Children’s self-regulation and understanding that their behaviour affects others and may have consequences is also a crucial part of learning at Whitchurch CE Infant & Nursery School.

 

We give the children lots of small roles with responsibility through the school, for example, Class VIP and this helps them feel a sense of pride and self-worth; which reinforces an understanding of what is ‘the right thing to do.’

 

Visits from community partners such as the police and fire service also help to develop our children’s understanding of roles within society.

 

Individual Liberty

 

At Whitchurch CE Infant & Nursery School children are given the freedom to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.

 

Children learn boundaries and how to take ‘safe risks’ through our Forest School curriculum.

 

They are supported to develop self-knowledge, self-confidence and resilience to cope with set-backs.

 

The RE, Collective Worship and PSHE curriculum reinforce opportunities to explore views and opinions.#

 

Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

 

Self-respect and respect for others form a core part of our school value system. It is also one of our Christian Values. ‘Talk Partners’ develop our children’s capacity to actively listen to the ideas and opinions of others. Children develop fair play through our PE curriculum.

 

All members of the school community treat each other with respect. Through our Religious Education curriculum we promote tolerance and understanding of a range of faiths, religions and cultures. As a Church school we promote this tolerance and understanding through our Christian values and our daily acts of Collective Worship.
